He received further training in the United States in 2005 and Estonia in 2007. From 2007 to 2009, he was the commander of the 4th Infantry Brigade, which suffered the heaviest casualties of all Georgian military units in the 2008 South Ossetia War with Russia. In 2009 Kalandadze was promoted to the position of deputy commander of the Georgian Land Forces and became first deputy chief of joint staff. Simultaneously, from 2010 to 2011, he served as acting commander of the land forces. Critics said Kalandadze's promotion was a "political decision".
